Which songs have been covered better by artists who didn't originally sing them?

There's a few of these that come to mind for me, some of which may come as borderline sacrilege to some:

Godhead - Eleanor Rigby (originally by The Beatles)
Transatlantic - The Return Of The Giant Hogweed (originally by Genesis)
Dream Theater - To Tame A Land (originally by Iron Maiden)
Blind Guardian - Spread Your Wings (originally by Queen)
Deadsy - Brand New Love (originally by Sebadoh)
Yoso - Hold The Line (originally by Toto)
Umphrey's McGee - Girlfriend Is Better (originally by Talking Heads)
Godsmack - Good Times, Bad Times (originally by Led Zeppelin)
Ayreon - Space Oddity (originally by David Bowie)

Mike's Music A-Z: ZZ Top - Eliminator 26th Oct, 2010 @ 19:26

Country of origin: United States
Year of release: 1983 (2007 remaster)
Genre(s): Hard rock, blues rock
Similar artists: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Deep Purple, Stevie Ray Vaughan

Description: One of the more unique entrants in the blues rock field, ZZ Top's "Eliminator" combined their normal blues-tinged AOR with analog synths and a New Wave sensibility that still holds up nearly three decades later.  While they might just be known to the younger set for beards and hot rods, this is an incredible album, even today.

Sample tracks:
Gimme All Your Lovin'
Sharp Dressed Man
Legs

Mike's Music A-Z: Yes - Fragile 25th Oct, 2010 @ 17:03

Country of origin: United Kingdom
Year of release: 1971 (2003 remaster)
Genre(s): Symphonic progressive rock
Similar artists: Genesis, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Camel

Description: One of the most influential symphonic prog albums ever, Fragile combines a series of short "solo" pieces featuring the individual musicians with a handful of lengthier, more ambitious tracks, most notably "Roundabout" and "Heart of the Sunrise".

Sample tracks:
Roundabout
South Side Of The Sky
Heart of the Sunrise

Mike's Music A-Z: X Japan - Dahlia 24th Oct, 2010 @ 21:26

Country of origin: Japan
Year of release: 1996
Genre(s): Progressive metal, symphonic rock
Similar artists: Dream Theater, Nightmare, Buck-Tick

Description: The final album from the undisputed largest name in Japanese metal prior to their 1997 split (the remaining members have reformed the band and have a new album planned for 2011, but this for now remains their final album).  More focused on ballads than most of their previous albums, it still carries a handful of more metal-focused tracks (including, among others, "Drain", which evokes comparison to Nine Inch Nails).

Sample Tracks:
Dahlia
Scars
Drain

Mike's Music A-Z: Witch - s/t 23rd Oct, 2010 @ 15:37

Country of origin: United States
Year of release: 2006
Genre(s): Doom metal, stoner rock
Similar artists: Black Sabbath, Kyuss, Candlemass

Description: Side project of Dinosaur Jr. guitarist J Mascis (who serves as the band's drummer), Witch's debut takes the classic doom metal sound of bands like Black Sabbath and adds more... everything.  More slinky vocals, more distorted guitar, more fuzzy bass, more throbbing percussion.  An absolutely hypnotic release.

Sample tracks:
Seer
Soul of Fire
Rip Van Winkle

Mike's Music A-Z: Vangough - Manikin Parade 22nd Oct, 2010 @ 15:13

Country of origin: United States
Year of release: 2009
Genre(s): Progressive metal
Similar artists: Dream Theater, Queensryche, Symphony X

Description: A project focusing largely around multi-instrumentalist Clay Withrow (who previously recorded, produced, and published an album entirely on his own), Vangough takes the now pretty well run into the ground approach of late 80s and early 90s progressive metal bands and adds synthesizer work inspired by video games (the band has since released an album of video game music) that would not seem out of place with bands like Genesis or Styx.  Lyrically, the band focuses largely on social commentary with a snide, satirical tone.

Sample tracks:
Estranger
Paradise For The Lost
Gabrielle

Mike's Music A-Z: Umphrey's McGee - Mantis 21st Oct, 2010 @ 14:20

Country of origin: United States
Year of release: 2009
Genre(s): Art rock
Similar artists: Frank Zappa, Phish, The Allman Brothers Band

Description: An art-rock jam band with improvisational tendencies, Umphrey's McGee wouldn't be anything one would classify as "typical" by any stretch of the imagination.  While not as sprawling as some of their prior efforts (like the two-disc, 39-track The Bottom Half), it follows the band's typical hallmark of being comprised largely from past recording sessions and ideas developed during live improv sessions.

Sample tracks:
Made To Measure
Cemetary Walk
1348

Mike's Music A-Z: Transatlantic - The Whirlwind 20th Oct, 2010 @ 18:12

Country of origin: United States, United Kingdom, Sweden
Year of release: 2009
Genre(s): Symphonic progressive rock
Similar artists: Yes, Genesis, The Flower Kings

Description: The third album from Transatlantic, a progressive rock supergroup focused on playing sprawling, symphonic rock music in the vein of classic 1970s bands like Yes.  This particular album is notable in the fact that the entire album is one extended composition, running 78 minutes in length, evocative of some of Jethro Tull's early albums (the same could be said of modern efforts by Porcupine Tree and Neal Morse, the latter of whom is a member of Transatlantic).

Sample tracks:
II. The Wind Blew Them All Away
V. Out Of The Night
VII. Evermore
